Here are some of the things that make Canyon Rim Ranch a great place to live.
Location
CRR is located 1 hour from major Black Hills attractions such as Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and the Hot Springs Mammoth Site. Groceries and restaurants are 30 minutes away in Custer, Hot Springs, and Edgemont. Large stores and a regional airport are 1 1/2 hours away, in Rapid City. Northern Black Hills locations of Spearfish, Sturgis, Deadwood, and the Terry Peak Ski Area can be reached in about 2 hours.
Clubhouse
The Red Canyon Saloon and Social Club is our gathering place. The annual HOA meeting weekend activities take place in the building, on the deck, and under a large tent pitched on the lawn. Members gather here for various barbecues, happy hours, holiday and other celebrations. Owners who have not yet built homes on the ranch can visit and relax at the clubhouse. The deck is an excellent vantage point for elk and deer viewing at dusk, and for enjoying the beautiful sunsets.
Horse Barn
CRR members have use of the horse barn and pasture, which are located near the clubhouse. There is a tack room, 4 inside/outside stalls, with room for 4 more. The 80 acre pasture has been subdivided into 3 sections. Horses can be trained or worked in a smaller area with a wood fence. Hay, machinery, and other equipment can be stored in a separate building. Riding is enjoyed on various marked trails throughout CRR or you can roam anywhere on the 2390 acres of Common Area.
Hiking and Riding
Hiking and horseback riding are available throughout the 2390 acre Common Area. Trails that are marked and mowed lead from the clubhouse to the bottom of the Red Canyon, and to the Conlon homestead, located in the center of the ranch. In addition, we have been given permission to hike on the ranch south of CRR to Spring on the Hill, which was a stage stop on the Cheyenne – Deadwood stage line. If you love to hike through large open spaces to ravines and hills covered in Ponderosa pine, then Canyon Rim Ranch is the place for you.
Forest Management
CRR has been following a Forest Management Plan developed in conjunction with the State Forest Service since 2010 to mitigate damage from wildfires, and to prevent insect infestation. To date hundreds of acres of trees have been thinned in the Common Area and many acres of meadow have been managed to prevent tree incursion. In addition, many CRR property owners have thinned trees on their lots. CRR has been awarded Family Forest Certification from the American Tree Farm System, and Stewardship Forest Certification from the USDA Forest Service. In 2018 CRR was recognized as a Firewise Community by the National Fire Protection Association, one of only a few communities to be so recognized in South Dakota.
